Self-Care

Five quiet minutes: a self-care reset for busy moms

When people say “take time for yourself,” it can feel almost laughable on the days when you barely have time to finish a cup of coffee while it’s still warm. So let’s talk about self-care that fits into a real day — the kind measured in minutes, not hours.

Lower the bar on purpose

A whole evening to yourself would be lovely. It’s also rare. The version of self-care that actually happens is small: five minutes on the back step, a walk around the block, a few pages of a book that’s just for you.

Protect the small window

Pick one tiny window and guard it. For me it’s those first quiet minutes of the morning. For you it might be the drive home, or ten minutes after bedtime. Name it, and treat it as non-negotiable.

Let it be unproductive

This is the hard part. The five minutes don’t need to be a workout or a meditation or anything you can check off a list. They can just be rest. You’re allowed to do nothing, briefly, and call it care.

You can’t pour from an empty cup — and you don’t have to wait for a free afternoon to start refilling it.
